I think I'll lose a few plants this year, especially the rockeries. It was so mild for a week there that the plants were fooled and I could see green popping up and now it's freezing. It hasn't stayed landed long today, it's still snowing but it's that horrible slushy stuff.

Well my cordyline has had it, swore I'd never get another, they don't like the wet and cold, got this one through last winter, first one ever, but it's gone now. Prefer phormium (Flax) just as nice and tough as old boots.

I've replaced most of my plants with shrubs that are hardy over the years, and have little maintainance. I have loads of conifers and heathers, rockeries (think I told you that before. For colour I have a selection of hydrangeas dotted about the place. The oast 4 years or so I've seen the value of evergreens so the conifers are a must and I've got several types. I love the lime greem ones, always gorgeous, all year round. I think my bulbs and the couple of rose bushes left are the only other flowers I have. The rose bushes look like they were here from when my house was built (1930's, most likely) I know because they smell like roses, not like those hybrid ones. I got rid of all the crap modern ones and just kept the old ones, for the smell and for the massive size of the flower heads. Realistically, who am I to dig up something older than me and kill it, and the roots are likely so deep down now that it would take a mechanical digger
Oh no, I have a section down the back patio with hostas surrounding it, they flower but not for long, but they do get real big. They need split this year, they were choking last summer.

Apart from your power problems, had any snow yet, or is it only over the east side.

we had some slushy stuff today but it didn't land. They say it will snow tonight. It's so cold though, 1c this morning at 9am then by lunchtime it was 2c. This is ridiculous for March. That's why I was so annoyed that the power went down again for so long, with a combi boiler it meant I had no heating or anything, luckily I have a gas cooker so was able to put on pots of water for a cuppa.
What's it like down there?

Just cold and miserable and raining and the wind is getting up as well. It's a pain, I got loads cleared in the garden last couple of weeks but can't get out to finish off.
I've got a combi as well, my cooker is electric oven and gas hob so I am usually covered. Mind middle of april they are putting new gas main pipes and new pipes to the houses in so will probably be without gas for a couple of days, just have to get my camping stove out.

being without gas isn't too big a thing as you can use the microwave and you'll still be able to use the oven. It's just really cold here today and I was just out, some places you can see there has been snow but it's not a lot, just at the sides of the roads. It's like a never ending winter.

well it didn't snow anymore today, saw white stuff hit the indscreen when driving but it came to nothing. Let's hope for the best. You know what they say, "If March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb" and vice versa, April soon and just the miserable rain to go before we get a week of sun then it's winter again

we're unpredictable here too, but then Scotland is always like that anyway. Today was lovely and I went out with just a shirt and cardigan, before I knew it we had a shower. I was ok though it was over before I got out of the shops. I was just at the shop there and it's still reasonably warm at 10.30pm

Our first thunder storm for the year is starting right now. My little one is scared of thunder. I'm scared of lightning because I almost got hit last year and now it scares me. :(
Here we have the saying, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes." It is true.

Here it can be rain and it cools off, but it can still be warm and nice weather out. Last year me and my little one went to the store. We went went out into the parking lot and is started down pouring rain. After the short distance to the car, we were soaked. I put him in the car and by the time I had the groceries in, we were double soaked. By the time we got home, it had stopped. LOL.
